18-Hole Mini Golf Course Construction at Drummond Golf, West Beach, South Australia
Mini Golf Creations designed and built MGmax in conjunction with James Wilcher, an 18-hole, par 2 mini golf course at Drummond Golf Driving Range in West Beach, Adelaide. The course sits on a 2,500 m² site, which makes it the largest mini golf course in South Australia, and it opened to the public in late 2024. Every hole has two tees and two pin positions, so players choose between four colour-coded levels of difficulty on each one.

What did Drummond Golf want from a mini golf course?
Drummond Golf West Beach has run one of Adelaide’s best-known driving ranges for around 15 years. With seven golf courses within seven kilometres of the site, the business had always focused on golfers working on their own game, so the range was built for individual practice.
Franchisee owner Peter Radford told Golf Australia that the mini golf course was the first step towards something people could play together, with a new building of undercover bookable bays, food and beverage and tracking technology to follow.
The brief also had to suit a low handicapper and a seven-year-old playing in the same group. As Radford put it, “We wanted every hole to be potentially hole-able,” and four ways to play each hole were part of the plan from the start.
How does each hole play four different ways?
Each of the 18 holes has two tee positions and two pin positions. Pairing them gives four versions of the same hole, and each option is colour coded by difficulty so players can pick the one that suits them. A family can stick to the easier combinations while a golfer who has just finished a bucket of balls on the range takes on the harder ones, and they still finish the round together. Some holes are set up so a first-timer has a real chance at a hole in one, which the venue promotes as part of the appeal.
Why does MGmax look like a real golf course?
MGmax is designed in a modern links style. Each hole is shaped to look like a scaled-down golf hole, without the brick edging and rock borders of older putt putt courses. Radford noted that this is the direction mini golf has moved in over recent years, and it is how Mini Golf Creations has always worked. Our founders spent most of their careers as golf course superintendents and designers, and we build courses that look, feel and play like real golf on a smaller scale.
Next to a driving range, where a large share of visitors already play golf, that matters. You can read more about how we plan a layout on our design and process page, and about the surfaces we use on our mini golf turf page.
Construction
Mini Golf Creations followed its proven mini golf course construction process to deliver this project.
How does MGmax work for groups and events?
Tee times run from 8am until 8pm on weekdays and until 6pm on weekends and most public holidays. Rounds are booked online, Drummond members and their guests get 20% off, and the venue takes exclusive bookings for large groups, usually in the last two or three open hours on Fridays and Saturdays. MGmax is marketed to families, groups of friends, workmates after knock-off and corporate functions. For a business that was built around solo practice, that group trade is new.
